We are going to explain <strong>what carding is<\/strong>, what are the <strong>most common methods<\/strong> of spreading the attack and <strong>how you can prevent it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>What is carding?<\/h2>\n<p>This is the scam by which cybercriminals <strong>counterfeit, copy bank cards or steal financial information<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Once they get our information, they can access the money and use our card in an unauthorised way.<\/p>\n<h2>How are our card details stolen?<\/h2>\n<p>On the one hand, they could get hold of our data, randomly, using algorithms that generate combinations that can match our card numbers, including the security number.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, however, cybercriminals have been using social engineering techniques to carry out more effective attacks. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esferize.com\/en\/what-is-phishing-how-does-it-work-and-how-to-protect-yourself\/\">Phishing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esferize.com\/en\/phishing-variants-vishing-and-smishing\/\">smishing, vishing<\/a> or shoulder surfing<\/strong>. If we have been victims of any of these cyber-attacks, we are susceptible to carding.<\/li>\n<li>Spread of <strong>malware<\/strong>, such as <strong>keyloggers<\/strong>, which are capable of capturing our keystrokes on the smartphone keyboard.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Malicious and fraudulent websites<\/strong> where we have entered our bank details.<\/li>\n<li>Use of R<strong>FID or NFC readers<\/strong> that can obtain our data. It is enough for them to have brought the reader within 15 centimetres of our card.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Databases<\/strong> of customers or users of websites whose security has been compromised.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What do they do with our data?<\/h2>\n<p>Once cybercriminals have got hold of our financial information, <strong>they will make purchases to verify that the information is valid<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Generally, they will first try <strong>small purchases of low amounts<\/strong> so as not to arouse suspicion. They will then increase spending to try to determine the available balance on the card.<\/p>\n<h2>How can we avoid carding?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Delete SMS or e-mails from unknown senders<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Review our banking operations and transactions periodically<\/strong>. Pay special attention to major events when there are more transactions in our account, such as Black Friday, Christmas or holidays.<\/li>\n<li>It is very important to <strong>deactivate the NFC system on your smartphone<\/strong> when you are not using it.
